In this video, Fr. John Boyle answers why we should go to church to worship the Lord. The first question is: do you love the Lord? If so, then you are called to worship Him how He wants, and not how you want to. This includes gathering with other members of your family. If you did not ever go to family functions with your relatives, you would soon lose touch. You would still be a member of the family, but not an active and living member. It is the same with the Church. To be a true disciple of Christ is to be part of a family. We are brothers and sisters in Christ. So instead of thinking of it as going to church, we should think of it as being the Church.
We share the feast at the family table that is necessary for eternal life. We gather at the table of the living bread. We are expected to gather at the family’s celebrations, just as we are expected to with our relatives. So we should pray on our own in our own way, but not instead of going to church to celebrate with our family. Jesus said that, “For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them” (Matthew 18:20). And so we know that when we gather as His Church, He is among us.
